Asthma

Asthma affects about three million people. Six out of ten people with asthma do not have control of their disease. Their poorly controlled asthma may lead a severe, life-threatening asthma attack and permanent lung damage. Asthma symptoms do not have to be tolerated. Total asthma control is attainable for the majority of Canadians with asthma. Need more information? Feel free to come in and discuss your questions with one of our pharmacists.

Flu or A Cold?

Sometimes it’s difficult to determine whether it is the flu or a cold that is at the root of your sniffles, cough and runny nose. Both are caused by viruses, but the viruses are different and treatment can be different. Preventing the spread of viruses is key to helping one avoid both – wash hands regularly, avoid contact with potentially contaminated objects, cover coughs and sneezes, and get the flu shot!

Menopause

About a third of Canadian women are 45 years of age or older – the time when menopause may begin. During and after menopause, women need to pay special attention to factors such as blood pressure control, bone health, and cholesterol levels. At one time estrogen was recommended for menopause symptoms, but other approaches are now preferred. Regardless of age or symptoms, keeping healthy is the goal.

Pain Management

Relieving Pain – About a third of Canadians have chronic pain – pain that is always present. Sometimes, identifying and treating the cause is all that is needed to stop the pain. In other cases, treatments such as drugs or procedures including massage, acupuncture, physiotherapy, and even surgery are required. Never accept your pain as “normal” – seek effective treatment.

Rheumatoid Athritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a form of arthritis that involves inflammation in the joints. It is unlike osteoarthritis, where cartilage on the end of the bones wears away, but it can affect people of any age and result in pain, reduced mobility, and disability. About 1% of Canadians are affected, but symptoms can be controlled with early and aggressive treatments.

Shingles

Shingles is the reactivation of the chicken pox virus in the body. Every year approximately 130,000 cases are reported, and the incidence is increasing. One reason may be because the condition mainly affects older people and people are living longer. Still, estimates state 95% of Canadians are at risk. Shingles can be painful, but the potential resulting nerve damage, known as “postherapetic neuralgia”, can be even more persistent and uncomfortable.
